Theresa May to unveil fresh drive to build thousands of council houses - report

Theresa May will today announce a major new drive to build hundreds of thousands of council houses, it has been reported.

In her speech closing the Conservative party conference, she will reveal plans to work with housing associations to throw up the new homes, according to The Sun.

The move is aimed at lowering rents in the private sector by radically increasing the supply and going some way towards tackling the housing crisis.

Mrs May will also use her speech to restate her commitment to capping consumers' energy bills, as promised in the party’s manifesto, the paper said.

The Government’s pledge to tackle high energy prices was apparently shelved after the Conservatives lost their majority at the general election.

Mrs May told the BBC last night: “What I want people to take from this conference is that the Conservative party is a government that truly is looking to build a country that works for everyone, that we have listened to voices from the election...

"That we are on that mission to ensure that we no longer see people in our country that feel left behind and that for young people they see that there is a bright future, that they will be able to build a better future for themselves than their parents."

She will also use her speech at the conference in Manchester to tell her warring government it is time to "shape up" and start delivering for ordinary people.
