Saga respond to Meg Hillier MP
Paul Green, Saga's director of communication, has responded to Meg Hillier MP's PoliticsHome article on health and social care funding.
Meg Hillier is absolutely right that the budget announcement of a £2bn boost to social care funding is simply not enough to solve the crisis in our health and care systems. Whilst this is a very welcome short term fix, it is not a long term solution. What we really need is a properly considered solution that stretches far wider than just throwing some cash into the ring.
We believe that more public and private money is needed. The Government can help by enabling more families to pay for care. This could be helping people to save for care in a tax efficient way, allowing extra tax-free withdrawals from pension savings if it is paying for care, or encouraging families to contribute more by allowing care bills to be tax deductible. There should also be more practical support for family careers who through their personal devotion also save the social care system from being completely overwhelmed.
