Andrea Leadsom: Why I am backing Penny Mordaunt
2 min read
One of the reasons I so want Penny Mordaunt to prevail in this race is that I believe only an authentic, conviction Brexiteer can finally bring this country together.
The British people don’t want to fight the battles of the past – and they won’t forgive those that attempt to do so to rewrite their own history.
Penny will unify and champion our country as well as our party. She offers the fresh start voters want to see on the programme they so enthusiastically backed less than three years ago.
I’ve worked alongside Penny in government, and I’ve seen someone with the single-minded application and calm competence to deliver.
We can trust Penny to deliver the Brexit dividend, to have a laser like focus on cost of living and to win the next general election
Policies like the VAT cut on fuel – paid for by increased duty revenues – demonstrate her determination to help us through the cost of living crisis.
As a passionate advocate of early years learning, I’m delighted by her proposal to give parents a budget to spend on their subsidised childcare so that it can best meet their work and life commitments.
As for her ability to stand up for Britain and against the likes of Vladimir Putin, I’ve seen how hard she fought for our armed forces as the first woman defence secretary.
She’s given us some excellent Despatch box victories in the Commons, taking on Labour’s Angela Rayner among others. We Tory MPs can see the fear in our opponents’ eyes.
Polls consistently show that she is the only candidate who can beat Labour at the next election.
I urge my colleagues to remember that when they vote in the next few days. We can trust Penny to deliver the Brexit dividend, to have a laser like focus on cost of living and to win the next general election.
Now is the time to choose Penny Mordaunt - the best candidate to be our Prime Minister.
Andrea Leadsom is the Conservative MP for South Northamptonshire.
