What is Women in Westminster: The 100?

Women in Westminster: The 100 celebrates the achievements and the valuable role women play in public life by recognising one hundred women from across the world of Westminster, who are leading the way in politics and public services; from parliamentarians, journalists, and civil servants to activists, think tankers, public affairs professionals and beyond.

Who organises Women in Westminster: The 100?

Women in Westminster: The 100 is organised by The House magazine, which is owned by Total Politics. Women in Westminster: The 100 is supported by Lloyds Banking Group.

How is Women in Westminster: The 100 selected?

The first stage is through public nominations. During a six-week period between September to November, we accept public nominations for Women in Westminster: The 100. The nomination period is advertised via the Women in Westminster: The 100 website, The House magazine and Civil Service World, as well as across our @TotalPolitics, @TheHouseMag, @politicshome, and @CSWnews X accounts, @womeninwestminster Instagram account, and via email communication to our marketing lists.

After the nomination window closes, all entries are reviewed by members from the Women in Westminster: The 100 team for initial sifting to ensure each nomination meets the Women in Westminster: The 100 criteria. Nominations may also be viewed by Lloyds Banking Group colleagues as supporters of the campaign, but they have no influence on the outcome of who is selected to be on Women in Westminster: The 100.

The reviewed public nominations, along with additional nominations suggested by our Patrons and the previous year’s Women in Westminster: The 100 list is then submitted to the Patron board to review and select one hundred women.

Who are the Women in Westminster: The 100 Patrons?

Our board of Patrons has cross-party political experience from both Houses of Parliament, as well as years of expertise from Whitehall, political journalism, and public affairs. You can view the current board here.

What are the criteria for Women in Westminster: The 100?

Nominations should describe the achievements of women from when the previous Women in Westminster: The 100 nominations closed, to when the nominations close for the current campaign.

This means that for Women in Westminster: The 100 2025, we are accepting nominations that describe their nominees’ achievements during the period from November 2023 until November 2024.

When deciding the Women in Westminster: The 100, our board of Patrons will above all consider an individual’s influence and their capacity to inspire.

Nominations should therefore aim to reflect at least one area of the following:

  • Setting up a high impact campaign or playing a part in enacting notable legislation
  • Making a distinctive, unusual, and/or innovative contribution in their field
  • Ability and willingness to act as a role model to others
  • An unsung contribution to the culture of Westminster or Whitehall
  • Shifting the dial of public opinion

The individual does not have to work or be based within Westminster, but their work needs to impact Whitehall and/or Westminster.

We welcome nominations for women under the criteria expressed in the Equality Act 2010. You can read more about this here.

Please note that being on Women in Westminster: The 100 previously does not guarantee one’s position on Women in Westminster: The 100 the following year.

Due to their involvement in collating The 100 our Patrons are not eligible to be on the Women in Westminster: The 100 list.

Our Patrons recognise there will be some individuals on Women in Westminster: The 100 that naturally split opinion, but this does not negate their ability to meet the criteria set out above. Our Patrons’ decision is final, and no correspondence will be entered into.

How do I submit a nomination for Women in Westminster: The 100?

We are accepting nominations for 2025 from 19 September 2024 until midnight on 01 November 2024.

There are so many talented women in Westminster who often go unrecognised. We therefore ask the public to nominate any woman working in Westminster or across the supporting sectors that you believe has gone above and beyond just being great at their job but has been truly influential and/or inspiring and resulted in an exceptional impact on politics or public life, during the period from November 2023 until November 2024.

The women selected for Women in Westminster: The 100 are, but are not limited to, parliamentarians, journalists, civil servants, activists, think tankers or public affairs professionals.

Public nominations must be submitted via the nomination portal, which can be accessed here.

You will be asked to provide your details as the nominator and asked to complete three questions:

Q1. Please explain why you would like to nominate this individual for Women in Westminster: The 100. This should include what they have done within the timeframe, from November 2023 until November 2024, that has been influential and/or inspiring and resulted in an exceptional impact on politics or public life.

Q2. How would you describe your nominee in one sentence.

Q3. If relevant, please provide supporting material (e.g. articles, videos, social media) on why you feel this individual should be on Women in Westminster: The 100. Please provide links to supporting materials.

When writing your nomination, we recommend you save your copy in a word document first and then paste it into the nomination form. We encourage you to remember the Women in Westminster: The 100 criteria and reference how your nominee meets the criteria in your nomination. Please note, there is a maximum word limit of 250 words for questions 1 and 2; 250 words is the maximum, answers may be shorter.

Please ensure your nomination is accurate to the best of your knowledge and please only include information, quotes or statistics that can be made public. Please refrain from using defamatory, denigrating, or abusive language.

Please note, your nomination may be used to help create the profile of your nominee should they be selected by our Patrons for Women in Westminster: The 100, although it will be anonymised e.g. “Take a look at the winners from recent reshuffles of the main parties’ front benches,” one of her nominators tells us.

What is the deadline for nominations?

We are accepting nominations for 2025 from 19 September 2024 until midnight on 01 November 2024.

Is there a fee to submit a nomination?

It is free of charge to submit a nomination for Women in Westminster: The 100.

Can I nominate myself?

Individuals may be nominated by someone else or may nominate themselves, as long as they meet the Women in Westminster: The 100 criteria.

Does the individual have to be based within Westminster?

The individual does not have to work or be based within Westminster, but their work needs to impact Whitehall and/or Westminster.

Do I have to tell the person that I am nominating them?

We recommend that you inform anyone you are nominating that you have done so, at your own discretion.

Should I ask lots of people to nominate the same person?

An individual need only be nominated once to be considered by our Patrons and the number of nominations received per nominee bears no weight in their selection. However, having multiple nominations that supply additional relevant information in support of a nominee’s claim, may help a nominee’s case.

Can I send in documents to support my nomination?

We ask all nominators to use the same format by completing the online nomination form. Within the form there is the option to include supporting materials (e.g. articles, videos, social media) via a weblink.

How do I know if my nomination has been successful or if I have made The 100?

After entering your nomination, you will receive an automatic confirmation email. If you do not receive this email please contact us, as your nomination may not have been successfully submitted and therefore cannot be considered. Please ensure you check your junk and spam folders, first, if you do not receive this confirmation email.

Due to the number of nominations, we are unable to advise if your nomination has been successful prior to Women in Westminster: The 100 being published.
