APC to fund second wave of low carbon vehicle technology projects
A second wave of projects aimed at shaping the vehicles of the future is to be funded by the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) through a new £75m competition managed by the Technology Strategy Board.
The APC funding competitions are designed to create UK capability in low-carbon automotive technologies, through collaborative research and development projects that will deliver significant reductions in vehicle CO2 or other emissions compared to current best-in-class technologies.
The APC is the centrepiece of the joint industry and government strategy for the automotive sector published in July last year. It is jointly funded by government and industry and will invest around £1bn over the next 10 years to develop, commercialise and manufacture greener and more efficient technologies for the engines of the future.
The first projects funded by the APC were announced last month and included proposals to upgrade Ford's award-winning EcoBoost engine and to apply Formula 1 technology from Williams for use in buses.
Future APC collaborative RD competitions, organised in partnership with the Technology Strategy Board and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, are expected to run twice a year on a six-monthly cycle.
