Dr Mary Bousted, general secretary of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL), said:

“Sir Michael is right that oversight “remains confused and inconsistent”. We have already commented to the Education Select Committee on the role of the Regional Schools Commissioners (RSCs) and it appears that Ofsted share some of our concerns, particularly around the role of the RSCs and their fit with other accountability bodies.

“ATL agree that accountability at present is a patchwork and it is about time the Government spotted this and did something about it.”
