The UK’s innovation agency and its Indian counterpart are to support joint Research Development projects led by businesses in the two countries.

A £5 million programme was announced today in New Delhi between the Technology Strategy Board and India’s Global Innovation Technology Alliance (GITA), working with the Department of Science and Technology.

Welcoming today’s announcement, Iain Gray, Chief Executive of the Technology Strategy Board, said:

“This is an important and exciting opportunity for UK businesses to work with partners in one of the fastest-growing economies on the planet. Bringing together the best of Indian and UK expertise should lead to some truly innovative developments for the benefit of both countries.”

The India-UK Collaborative Industrial RD Programme aims to support business-led collaborative RD projects between Indian and UK companies. The projects can also include academic organisations from both countries.
The competition focusses on two areas in particular: cleantech, especially energy systems; and affordable healthcare.

There is an urgent need to make better use of valuable energy resources and reduce their environmental impact. One of the priorities is to integrate future demand and energy supply into a flexible, secure and resilient energy system.
Affordable healthcare can encompass solutions based on a number of different technology areas, including: prevention; earlier and better diagnosis; access to healthcare; treatments; medical devices; as well as improved patient monitoring.
