Chancellor urged to back methane
The Government must support investment in the infrastructure so companies can convert their vehicles to methane, a group of MPs has said.
Ahead of the Budget, the All Party Parliamentary Group for Freight Transport said industry needs a firm commitment from the Chancellor to give long term support to the use of bio-methane, otherwise the UK will lose millions in potential investment.
The Department for Transport’s Low Emissions HGV Task Force has said there is “potential for a breakthrough in the take up of methane gas HGVs, but there are many challenges which need to be addressed to create the conditions for road freight operators to invest in new technologies and infrastructure”.
Rob Flello, Chair of the all-party group, said; “The APPG along with industry bodies will continue to push Government to take up these recommendations and hope that the Chancellor will support the adoption of methane in the upcoming budget.”
He said industry needs assurances that the duty regime will support investment in the long term and won’t be subject to rapid changes.
Flello has also back the Fair Fuel UK Petition which calls for a 3p cut in fuel duty.
“A cut in fuel duty would bring welcome relief to many who are struggling to with rising energy costs,” he said.
“The widespread support the Fair Fuel UK campaign has gained from businesses and the public demonstrates the strength of feeling that the issue generates. As a Member of Parliament I am going to continue to press the Government to take action on this issue.”
