Commenting on the Prime Minister's starter homes pledge, the Chartered Institute of Buildingsaid:

CIOB supports measures to build more homes, particularly as the UK is heading towards a shortfall of 1 million homes by 2022, but it is discouraging to see that the starter homes scheme comes with the dilution of well-understood standards and reduction in funding for supporting infrastructure. Stripping back standards such as these is a retrograde step, leading to a sacrifice in build quality and ultimately undermines long-term investment. Building the new homes we need provides a huge opportunity to curtail the skills gap that currently exists in the construction industry.

On developments such as these, we would encourage investment to be tied to training and job creation, and we would encourage government to incentivise the use of modern methods of construction to stimulate innovation.
