CIWM welcomes wider debate of the circular economy agenda

Chartered Institution of Wastes Management Chief Executive Steve Lee responds to a parliamentary debate and article from an MEP on the circular economy agenda.

“CIWM welcomes the views expressed by Baroness Jones of Whitchurch and Catherine Bearder MEP recently on the importance of the circular economy agenda as a platform to support sustainable economic growth and jobs, improved resource productivity and security, and an end to environmentally damaging consumption and disposal habits.

“Population growth will put the world’s natural resources – including water, raw materials, and food – under pressure, and we need vision and action both at an EU and a national level to catalyse and support changes in behaviour throughout the supply chain, from investors through to multi-national manufacturers, retailers and consumers. It is not just about recycling, it is about rethinking how we make, buy and use products to ensure that the embedded value in those products is not wasted but instead is put back to work in the economy time after time.

It is essential that the UK participates fully in this agenda and shows itself capable of developing long term policy frameworks and mechanisms to create a more sustainable and resilient future.”
