'Cumbria has a unique part to play in creating the Northern Powerhouse' - Sellafield Ltd
Head of Corporate Affairs at Sellafield Ltd marks #CumbriaDay ahead of a parliamentary event on 23rd January and points out that the site employs 11,000 people and contributes hundreds of millions of pounds to the Cumbrian economy.
Sellafield Ltd will again demonstrate its commitment to local Cumbrian businesses through its support of Cumbria Day in Parliament tomorrow.
The annual Cumbria Day, sponsored by Sellafield Ltd and supported by local MPs, will see parliamentarians meet a number of the area’s local enterprises and companies while sampling a selection of some of Cumbria’s finest produce in the form of speciality beers and spirits, cheeses, meats, breads and more.
We’re delighted to support Cumbria Day again. This week’s showcase will provide twelve businesses from across Cumbria the opportunity to meet key stakeholders and demonstrate how they contribute towards the local and national economy. As important as Sellafield and the nuclear industry is to Cumbria, we’re about so much more.
Cumbria Day gives our area the opportunity to showcase more of what the county does and just how good we are. I believe that Cumbria’s best days are ahead of us and it’s always good to see all of our Members of Parliament working together for the benefit of the County.
Sellafield employs more than 11,000 people, and contributes hundreds of millions of pounds to the Cumbrian economy. We’re leading the world in nuclear decommissioning and clean up, developing skills and technologies that will help to power the UK’s economy for decades to come. One of our key challenges is to ensure that we help build a resilient local economy by extracting as much value as possible from the £2 billion of taxpayers money that we spend at Sellafield every year. Value for our business, value for our owner: the NDA, value for the taxpayer and value for the local and national economy.
I want to see our economy strengthen and diversify with greater private sector investment, and this will be achieved by communities, businesses such as Sellafield Ltd and industry working closely together. Cumbria has a unique part to play in creating the Northern Powerhouse.
Trudy Harrison, Conservative MP for Copeland said: “Cumbria has a tremendous amount to offer, and Cumbria Day is a celebration of local businesses highlighting their incredibly hard work and commitment.”
Labour's Shadow Secretary of State for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, MP for Workington, Sue Hayman said: “It was great to host a range of Cumbrian businesses in Parliament, and welcome parliamentary colleagues to see why Cumbria is such a great place to visit, live and work. I was delighted that we had the opportunity again to share with colleagues our fantastic county and its produce.”
Tim Farron, Liberal Democrat MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale who organised this year’s event said: “Cumbria day is our chance to put our local communities in the spotlight at Parliament. We have fantastic businesses who will help us showcase our world class produce made in the heart of our stunning landscape, and I look forward to plying our senior politicians with this produce in aid of promoting our local economy.
Sellafield Ltd and many other businesses are supporting the Cumbria Day event 'A Taste of Cumbria' from 12.30 to 15.30 in the Jubilee Room in parliament on Wednesday 23rd January 2019.
