Delivering on the Government’s ambitions to build back better and level up the country will take more than this - CMI

Today’s spending review represents a missed opportunity to prepare the economy for these changes through dedicated investment for upskilling and retraining in important, productivity enhancing, higher level skills.

As we look to recover from the recession, the measures set out in today's Spending Review rightly focus on the people most in need of support - the long term unemployed, those with only lower level skills and young people just starting out in their careers. 

But delivering on the Government’s ambitions to build back better and level up the country will take more than this.

The pandemic has accelerated changes which were already happening in the world of work, with some jobs in some sectors no longer viable and new jobs emerging.

In that light, today’s spending review represents a missed opportunity to prepare the economy for these changes through dedicated investment for upskilling and retraining in important, productivity enhancing, higher level skills.
