Ineffectiveness of ‘fat shaming’
Commenting on a UCL study in the 'Obesity' journal today which finds that 'fat shaming' overweight people makes them put on weight instead of lose it, Dr Jacquie Lavin, Head of Nutrition and Research at Slimming World says that for years the weight management organization has recognized that those who are overweight carry a double burden: the burden of excess weight and the burden of guilt and shame.
“People who struggle with their weight need support and understanding not judgement, criticism and humiliation,” she says.
“Our own research among members reflects the experiences reported in this new study from University College London. Helping members to feel better about themselves is essential to their successful weight loss as they often turn to eating for comfort when upset. They also frequently report having being treated poorly by health professionals. We’ve recently launched a campaign calling for improved awareness and understanding by health professionals in raising the issue of weight with patients sensitively.
“Moreover, we believe that health professionals, especially GPs, should be better trained, equipped and aware of how to support effective behaviour change in a compassionate, non-judgemental way that empowers people to make healthy lifestyle changes.”
