The British Veterinary Association (BVA) is introducing a blended learning approach for its 2014 CPD programme which will see the introduction of related course reading material, pre-course questionnaires and the opportunity to engage with speakers after the event.

Courses range from basic to advanced levels and include theoretical and practical days.

The programme is also expanding for 2014, both geographically and in subject range in response to the results of a member survey conducted last year. Available at various locations across the country the BVA is this year offering equine, farm animal and exotic courses for the first time alongside an expanded small animal and non-clinical programme.

Clinical CPD highlights include:

• An equine lameness workout workshop (6 February in York)
• Coping with common surgical emergencies in small animal practice (13 February in London)
• Bums and tums for bunnies – a practical approach to common rabbit emergencies (20 March in Manchester)
• Camelid essentials for the first opinion practitioner (12 June in Reading)
• Backyard bird essentials (18 September in Bristol)

Non-clinical course highlights include:

• Planning for the last ten years in practice (27 March in London)
• Personal leadership and people management (Part 1 on 10 July and Part 2 on 2 September in London)
• Customer service – reception skills and communication (8 October in London)
• Clinical governance and evidence-based veterinary medicine (4 November in London)

Courses start from £120 including VAT with early bird offers available for events booked more than six weeks in advance, as well as substantial savings for BVA members and non-vet staff in a BVA member’s practice. To launch the CPD programme the BVA is offering all February courses at the early bird rate up until the day of the course.

The comprehensive 2014 offering has been programmed by the BVA CPD Group which comprises of veterinary surgeons across all disciplines.

Harvey Locke, chair of the BVA CPD Group, said:

“In our CPD member research project last year vets told us what kind of CPD they wanted, where they wanted it and at what level, all of which we have incorporated into our high quality, low cost CPD programme. Coupled with the additional benefits of blended learning these courses give vets and their staff fantastic value for money.

“In addition, our popular clinical refreshers which we run in conjunction with the Royal Veterinary College are back again and are ideal for those returning from a career break. We’ve also added a practical element to many of our courses this year which we hope vets will appreciate. All in all a comprehensive high value CPD programme.“
