The Nuclear Industry Association welcomes you to the new Parliament

Nuclear Industry Association

3 min read Partner content

Nuclear is absolutely essential to UK net-zero and energy security with urgent action needed to ensure we meet climate targets and create good, green jobs with new nuclear projects. Here’s how the NIA can help.

Who are we?

The Nuclear Industry Association is the trade association and representative voice of the UK’s civil nuclear industry. We represent over 300 companies across the UK from all aspects of the civil nuclear business including new build and decommissioning. Our industry employs over 85,000 people, providing skilled, long-term well-paid work and transformational opportunities for young people in every part of the country.

Why do we need more nuclear?

Soaring energy bills over the last three years has shone a light on an ugly truth – the UK is still too reliant on international gas markets to keep the lights on. The previous government had to tackle this by spending billions to get households through the winter and the new Labour government is all too aware that the UK energy system needs urgent reform, with nuclear energy forming a vital part of the solution.

Nuclear provides essential clean, reliable, affordable power and creates long-term and well-paid jobs in places that really need them. Producing stable, predictable power 24/7 whatever the weather, nuclear is the only always-on electricity source that is clean and British, working with renewables to ensure we have enough power on the grid.

How can we advance nuclear development in this Parliament?

Labour’s manifesto was clear on nuclear development: “we will ensure the long term security of the sector, extending the lifetime of existing plants, and we will get Hinkley Point C over the line. New nuclear power stations, such as Sizewell C, and Small Modular Reactors, will play an important role in helping the UK achieve energy security and clean power while securing thousands of good, skilled jobs”. This commitment to bolstering the UK’s nuclear generation programme highlighted that new government understands the ‘why’ of new nuclear. Here at the NIA, we are committed to helping with the ‘how’.

Our 2024 industry manifesto, ‘Jobs. Prosperity. Power’, outlines the five key actions we hope newly elected MPs will support during this Parliament:

  1. Progressing Sizewell C to a Final Investment Decision by autumn 2024 and extending the life of our current power stations
  2. Building a fleet of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) across the country and a third large-scale station at Wylfa on Anglesey to help rebuild industrial Britain
  3. Making the UK the best place to develop and deploy advanced nuclear reactors
  4. Maximising the UK’s fuel manufacturing capability to meet increased demand from allies for current and advanced nuclear fuels
  5. Selecting a suitable site in a supportive and willing community for a Geological Disposal Facility, a long-term solution for waste
