The £6bn government fund, announced today, to support local infrastructure improvements, must be spent in a co-ordinated way, ensuring that they form part of our overall transport infrastructure.

Paul Davies from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) said: “Those projects being announced will help to greatly solve local transport issues but it is imperative that they connect with our national infrastructure to ensure maximum benefit.

“It is imperative that this funding achieves maximum benefit by utilising new technologies which can deliver benefits in terms of better operation, increased accessibility and reduced costs.”

The £6bn is the first instalment of £12bn the coalition is investing in a series of local "Growth Deals".
