Satellite Applications Catapult Supports Space Industry MBA Programme

The Satellite Applications Catapult, a UK independent technology and innovation company based at Harwell Oxford, is working with the University of Surrey to develop the first space industry’s MBA programme. The scholarships will offer up to 75% for ambitious space professionals.

The Executive MBA programme has been designed to meet the needs of the UK space industry, and students joining Surrey’s Executive MBA in September 2013. Participating students will gain a thorough grounding in business theory and skills during their first year, with the opportunity in their second year to study specialist options focused on business issues relevant to the space and satellite industry and to undertake an applied dissertation in this field. These specialist modules are being developed in consultation with the Satellite Applications Catapult, Surrey Space Centre, and space sector businesses to ensure they meet the needs of the sector.

The UK space sector has made a significant contribution to the nation’s economy of £9.1 billion (as of 2010/2011) 6% of the current global economy. The growth target set by the Innovation Growth Strategy set out in 2010, suggest that UK space sector will grow to 10% of the global market which is estimated to be worth around £400 billion.

Stuart Martin, CEO of the Satellite Applications Catapult, said: “The Catapult believes that many of the technologies and applications that will help the UK reach its 2030 growth target will emerge from entrepreneurs and innovators studying at our universities today. We are delighted to be able to support this initiative, and look forward to working with many of these students and graduates in the future.”

Candidates who meet the general admission criteria for the Surrey MBA and are offered a place on the programme will be eligible to be considered for scholarships that can meet up to 75% of their fees. This represents a considerable commitment to the growth of the UK space industry. Full fees for 2013 entry are £21,500.

Places will be restricted so early application/enquiry is recommended.
