Ahead of Prime Minister’s Questions today, leading charities will come together outside Parliament to draw attention to the level of British support for refugees.

Save the Children, alongside campaigners from other NGOs and media outlets will celebrate the 1.4 million actions taken by the British public in reaction to the refugee crisis and encourage a commensurate response from the government.

The demonstrators will be outside Portcullis House between 10.30 and 12pm and will be publicising the action on social media using the #refugeeswelcome hashtag from @savechildrenuk.

The charity has been promoting a five point plan for Europe on the refugee crisis, which it expects to be championed at PMQs, as well as in the Opposition debate, which will take place afterwards.

In its 'Call for a 5 point plan for Europe', the organisation is urging the Government to maintain rescue efforts in the Mediterranean; provide safe and legal routes into Europe and a returns policies that respects the rights of children; provide proper reception and support, do more to relocate and resettle refugees; and tackle the root causes of unsafe migration.

As part of this plan, it will also be pushing the UK government to consider relocating 3,000 vulnerable children who are already in Europe, specifically children who have arrived here without any family at all.

Save the Children also hopes the plan will inform the European Home Affairs ministers meeting on 14 September.
