Scottish constituencies ‘worst in UK for road safety,’ new research finds

New research reveals Britain’s most dangerous areas for road accidents by parliamentary constituency, with areas north of the border coming out worst.

The Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety and the Direct Line Group have, for the first time, published the 2015 Parliamentary Constituency Road Safety Dashboard, which shows how the casualty rate by population varies across the country.

According to the findings, the Scottish constituencies of Banff and Buchan and West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine were found to have the highest casualty rates in the UK, while Bath had the lowest.

The Dashboard also provides an analysis of progress on improving safety over the last six years, comparing each constituency against the national average.

It found that Eltham in South East London had made the greatest improvement, outstripping the national average by 55%.

The latest revisions also includes a ‘regional index’ allowing comparisons between Scottish, Welsh, and London constituencies.

Separate analyses are provided by casualty severity, major road user casualty groups (pedestrians, pedal cyclists, motorcyclists and car users) and by age groups.

The purpose of the Dashboard is to provide specific local information to stimulate action to improve road safety for all road users.

MPs can see the state of road safety in their own constituency by visiting the Dashboard.
