Sellafield Ltd supports World Mental Health Day
World Mental Health Day on 10th October was once again a reminder for Sellafield Ltd employees to think about their mental health.
Alan Rankin of Sellafield Ltd Human Resources Department said: “Mental health problems can affect anyone, any day of the year, and this was a great day to show our support for better mental health and start looking after our own wellbeing.
“Since last year, and National Mental Health week in May, we've done a lot to promote mental health awareness here at Sellafield, and we're keen to continue this work – recognising that we all need to do more. Creating a network of mental health champions is part of our agenda for taking this forward.
“Approximately one in four people in the UK will experience a mental health problem each year. Talking to someone about these is often the first step to getting better.
“So make time to be there for your friends, family and colleagues, and remember that it's ok not to be ok.”
This is Me North West
“As part of World Mental Health Day, we sponsored and attended the launch of the 'This is Me' campaign in Liverpool. The campaign was designed to help raise awareness of and change attitudes towards mental health in the north-west business community, focusing on reducing stigma and making our work place a better place for everyone to be.”
Adrian Simper, Strategy Director for the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority also attended the event in Liverpool, and said: “In the nuclear industry we are obviously very conscious about the physical safety of our people, however we also need to do more about the condition of our employees’ mental health, and this campaign is a great opportunity to help people feel better about being at work.”
Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson was the guest speaker at the event, who said: “Mental health affects us all. It affects individuals, families, friends, loved ones and colleagues. And for too long mental health has been a taboo subject, a hidden problem that people were too embarrassed to talk about.
“I know first-hand just how destructive and damaging this culture of silence can be. This has to end now. That is why I am supporting the “This Is Me” campaign. By coming together to dispel the myths around mental health we can create inclusive workplaces where it is OK to talk about mental issues in an open and supportive way. Not only is this good for business – it will save lives.”
