The government’s plan of action for housing and planning policy

The Queen set out the governments programme for the coming year on several issues, including housing and planning policy.

The new government will work to increase home ownership by delivering more starter homes for first-time buyers, extend the Right to Build initiative for those wishing to build their own home, and extending Right to Buy discounts to housing association tenants. Furthermore, the government will also undertake measures to increase housing supply by introducing a register for brownfield land and simplifying the neighbourhood planning system.

Rico Wojtulewicz, policy advisor for the House Builder Association, commented: “Although the HBA welcomes attempts to increase the housing stocks, the extension of Right to Buy still remains an issue of substantial concern. With funding coming from the disposal of high-value council homes, the HBA remains sceptical on the viability of proposed one-for-one replacement measure and the consequent effect on the social housing stock”.
