Third Country demand helps drive sheep meat exports up
Demand for sheep meat from Third Countries has helped lead to a significant increase in exports from the UK, according to EBLEX.
The volume of UK sheep meat exports from January to October 2013 was up 12 per cent on the year at 85,000 tonnes, with exports to Third Countries up 66 per cent. The total value of sheep meat exports for the period was up 10 per cent, while the value of exports to Third Countries rose 56 per cent.
Jean-Pierre Garnier, EBLEX export manager, said: “The sheep meat export figures for January to October last year are very encouraging, with increases in exports to almost all markets. The year-on-year increase to Third Countries in terms of volume and value for the period is particularly pleasing.
“Developing non-EU export markets has been a key part of EBLEX’s strategy since 2010 and has led to the opening of more than 60 new markets.”
Mr Garnier will examine further opportunities and developments for exports in the cattle and sheep breakout session at the AHDB Outlook Conference next month. The event will take place on Wednesday, February 12 at One Great George Street, Westminster.
Food and Farming Minister George Eustice MP will deliver the opening address at the conference, which will also feature keynote presentations on challenges facing the UK supply chain for livestock products and international trade. Individual breakout sessions will be held for the cattle and sheep sector, pig and poultry sectors and dairy sector.
