Local Government People draws together details of this week's local by-election results and changes to councils' political compositions.

Local authority by-elections held Thursday 1st May 2014:

Highland Council – Caol and Mallaig: Independent gain.

By-election held following the resignation of Independent councillor Eddie Hunter.

**Election conducted under the single transferable vote system**

Ben Thompson – Independent – elected in the fourth stage of the count.

Mr Thompson gained 932 first preference votes of a quota of 2,391.

Turnout: 34.4%

Political compositions of the local authorities concerned:

Highland Council: Independent 34, SNP 21, Liberal Democrats 14, Labour 8, Independent Nationalist 1, Non-aligned 2 – No overall control
