Money that could be used to benefit patients is instead haemorrhaging out of the NHS in compensation and legal fees for clinical negligence claims. In the year ending 31 March 2014, over £1bn was paid out in total on behalf of all English hospitals. Dr Christine Tomkins, MDU chief executive, explains we are facing a nationwide problem with increasing costs of clinical negligence claims and suggests that reform of the way compensation awards are calculated could be the answer.
