The Lily Foundation supports the motion today relating to mitochondrial donation and calls on MPs to vote in favour

The Lily Foundationwas set up in memory of Lily Merritt, who lost her battle with Mitochondrial Disease at just eight months old. The charity now works tirelessly to support families affected by this devastating condition.

Mitochondrial Disease is unimaginably cruel. It is progressive and debilitating. It strips children of skills they have learned and places huge strain on the whole family. The reality of having another baby likely to suffer in the same way is terrifying for families.

Mitochondrial Donation will be a lifeline for many families wanting more children, giving them hope of having a baby free of Mitochondrial Disease and suffering. There will be no pressure, it will be an informed decision supported by professionals. It is about choice. Each family will decide if it is right for them.

We welcome the unprecedented rigour of the scientific review process and acknowledge that any new procedure involves risks. However, we know only too well that current symptom relief also involves risk as many drug combinations we are forced to give, still remain untested in children. We therefore believe the potential risks associated with Mitochondrial Donation procedures are vastly outweighed by the hope this will give affected families.

If this was your child would it be acceptable?

Please make the effort to vote

These children are worth it aren’t they?
