WATCH: We cannot end extreme poverty without clean water, sanitation, and hygiene - Hilary Benn MP
With a new International Development Secretary, Rt Hon Penny Mordaunt MP, and an updating of Government plans, WaterAid have launched their brand new MP video ‘Spend a Penny, Save a Pound’.
The video features speakers including former Secretary of State’s Rt Hon Andrew Mitchell MP and Rt Hon Hilary Benn MP and calls on the UK Government to become a global water, sanitation and hygiene leader.
We cannot end extreme poverty and build a healthier, more prosperous world without access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene.
Investing in water, sanitation and hygiene is one of the best ways to achieve lasting change. It helps ensure children are born and grown up healthier and have the chance to go to school and fulfil their potential, leading whole communities to thrive. It is also an extremely cost effective use on the UK’s Aid budget.
The UK Government is a global development leader and has the power to help change this. However currently less than 2% of the UK’s bilateral aid is invested in water, sanitation and hygiene. This is why WaterAid are calling on the UK Government to raise their ambition and become a global water, sanitation and hygiene leader.
