Downing St 'in the dark' over details of Trump visit to the UK

John Ashmore

Downing St has reportedly not been given details of Donald Trump's preferred itinerary when he visits the UK early next year.

Although dates have apparently been agreed for the US president's brief trip next February, The Times reports there have not been any discussions about what his engagements will be, aside from attending the opening of the new American embassy in London.

The Prime Minister came in for criticism for offering Mr Trump a full state visit just after he entered the White House, although the February visit will be a low-key working trip rather than the full red carpet treatment.

While Downing St insists the offer of a state visit remains open, no date has yet been set.

Meanwhile US ambassador Woody Johnson insists the relationship between Mr Trump and Theresa May remains “very, very good,” despite them falling out over Mr Trump's decision to re-tweet anti-Muslim videos posted by far-right group Britain First.

Mrs May said he had been "wrong" to do so, provoking an angry response on Twitter from the president.

Asked about the prospect of a visit, Mr Johnson told Radio 4’s Today programme: "Absolutely, I think he will come… It hasn't been officially announced but I hope he does."

Elsewhere Mr Trump suffered a blow to his domestic political fortunes when controversial Republican candidate Roy Moore lost the race for the vacant Senate seat in Alabama.
