A Labour MP was left “badly shaken up” after he was brutally mugged on his way home from Parliament last night.
Adrian Bailey was attacked by “up to six” assailants near his home in Southwark at around 10pm last night.
The 72-year-old MP for West Bromwich West suffered a number of blows including strikes to the head with a large milk container, according to the Press Association.
He handed over his wallet and phone and suffered bruises but did not require hospital treatment and was back at work today.
“I appreciate that many other people have gone through what I went through last night and it really brought home to me the value of having bobbies on the beat to deter such attacks,” he said in a statement today.
“Every member of the public deserves the right to walk about in a safe and non-threatening environment.
“The Metropolitan Police response has been excellent and they are working hard with me to identify the perpetrators of this attack.”
Mr Bailey called the police and reported the crime as soon as he got home last night.
