Hammond to propose opening public land to stimulate housebuilding

The Chancellor is considering Budget plans to stimulate housebuilding by freeing up public land.
Philip Hammond is also considering allowing more development on green belt land. Both measures are aimed at solving Britain’s housing problems.
Many Conservatives believe the party will struggle to reach under-40s at the next election if it cannot help more people on to the housing ladder.
But the plans are nonetheless likely to be opposed by Tory backbenchers, especially in the South East.
A Downing Street source said that: “The PM has moved on this issue but is not entirely there yet.”
In No 10 talks with the construction industry earlier this week, the Theresa May pledged to take “personal ownership” over the housebuilding issue.
Before the 2015 election, the party promised to build a million new homes in England alone by 2020.
