Theresa May hits back at grime star Stormzy over Grenfell tragedy criticism

Theresa May has rejected criticism of the Government's response to the Grenfell Tower tragedy by grime artist Stormzy.

The star launched his attack during his politically-charged performance at last night's Brit awards, saying: "Yo Theresa May, where's the money for Grenfell?

"What, you thought we just forgot about Grenfell? You criminals, and you've got the cheek to call us savages, you should do some jail time, you should pay some damages, you should burn your house down and see if you can manage this."

But in response, the Prime Minister's official spokesman said Mrs May "absolutely committed" to ensuring those affected by the inferno - which claimed the lives of 71 residents - are cared for and that the public inquiry set up by the Government will unearth answers.

He said more than £58m had been committed in the aftermath of the blaze to help with emotional support and re-housing those affected, among other projects.

“She is absolutely committed. She has met with survivors and families of victims on a number of occasions,” the spokesman said.

“The PM has been very clear that Grenfell was an unimaginable tragedy that should never have happened and should never be allowed to happen again.

“She is determined that the public inquiry will discover not just what went wrong but why the voices of the people of Grenfell had been ignored over so many years.”

The Government has also pledged money for more community spaces and monitoring for the local borough of Kensington and Chelsea to ensure victims get the assistance they need over the coming years.

Jeremy Corbyn congratulated Stormzy, who has been a vocal critic of the Government’s reaction to the disaster since last year, following his performance.
