Theresa May ‘seeks Donald Trump meeting to make peace’ after cancelled visit

Theresa May will try to meet with Donald Trump in Davos in a bid to repair relations after he cancelled a planned visit to London due next month.
The President last week tweeted that he would no longer be making the trip because of an earlier US administration’s decision to move the country’s embassy out of central London.
Reports suggested however that the commander-in-chief’s move was more likely on the back of planned public protests and past jibes from senior UK political figures.
The Times quotes senior Whitehall sources saying that rather than Mr Trump travel to the UK from the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, the Prime Minister will instead try to arrange a meeting "as soon as possible" at the summit.
The paper adds that while Downing Street was not aware of any efforts to set up a meeting, a senior figure said Davos had been identified as an opportunity to “engineer an encounter”.
Mr Trump’s team are said to have kept the UK Government in the dark over his abrupt cancellation other than last Friday’s tweet.
A Whitehall source added that Mr Trump objected to perceived slights from senior UK figures, including a rebuke from Mrs May when he retweeted a video from far-right group Britain First.
Mrs May’s attendance at the forum in Davos, which begins a week today, has yet to be officially confirmed.
