Theresa May unveils unwitting colleague as Celebrity First Dates contestant

1 min read

Theresa May today used parliament's primetime period to reveal Tory backbencher Michael Fabricant will take part in a hit TV dating show.

The often colourful MP used the sought after slot at Prime Minister's Questions to confirm his colleague's backing for Birmingham to pip Kuala Lumpur as a host for the 2022 Commonwealth games.

However the PM was – like most people on a Wednesday lunchtime – more keen to talk about Channel Four reality TV, catching her colleague off guard and telling the nation that he is due to take part in popular series, Celebrity First Dates.

The show involves couples who have not previously met being filmed dining at a top London restaurant – feeding the viewer’s voyeurism either through an endearing rapport, or at the other end, a near unbearably awkward exchange.

After taking the chamber by surprise with her revelation, Mrs May added: “What I’m not sure about is whether my honourable friend is the celebrity or the first date!”

Mr Fabricant responded with the sort of polite and convincing chuckle that may come in useful at the dinner table.
