‘Toxic’ Boris Johnson could cause Tory election wipeout in London
2 min read
Senior Conservatives have warned that the party could be facing disaster in London local elections due to the Foreign Secretary’s Brexit stance.
Party figures fear that the high profile Brexiteer will alienate voters in the overwhelmingly Remain-backing city in local elections this May.
Threatened by a resurgent Labour party, backed by ground troops from campaign group Momentum, Tory councillors fear that the party could face near-annihilation in the poll.
Asked if the party faced a bad election result, one senior Tory cited Mr Johnson’s ‘battered’ reputation, telling The Times ‘No, much worse, I mean really f******g bad. Particularly in London. London is just a complete disaster.’
Another decried the lack of preparation and campaigning ahead of the election.
‘We are getting more professionals out into the field now but in an ideal world this would have been done six months ago. Instead nothing was done before Christmas.’
In the 2017 General Election Labour increased its vote share in 71 out of 73 Greater London constituencies.
