Jeremy Corbyn has urged the US and North Korea to reduce tensions and avoid a devastating nuclear attack - saying any such blast would be “unthinkable”.
The Labour leader said any nuclear blast would “kill millions on both sides of the Korean border and of course in neighbouring countries”.
His comments follow a warning from North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un who said a plan was under development to fire missiles towards a US nuclear base in Guam.
US president Donald Trump has said any threats towards his nation would be “met with fire and fury like the world has never seen”.
According to the Washington Post, US intelligence officials believe Pyongyang has developed a nuclear warhead small enough to fit inside its missiles.
But amid the ratcheting tensions the Labour leader and long-standing opponent of nuclear weapons painted a stark picture of the consequences of their use in warfare.
“The idea that anyone can contemplate using nuclear weapons at any stage against anybody is unthinkable,” he told Sky News today.
“There is no such thing as an isolated nuclear attack. It will kill millions on both sides of the Korean border and of course in neighbouring countries.”
Theresa May is yet to comment on the situation between North Korea and the United States.
But a Foreign Office spokesperson said yesterday: “We will continue to work with the US and our international partners to maintain pressure on North Korea and counter the security threat posed by its pursuit of nuclear weapons.
“We have been consistently clear and forthright in our condemnation of North Korea’s destabilising and illegal behaviour, including through support for UN Security Council resolutions to bring in sanctions that will limit North Korea’s ability to pursue its nuclear weapons programme.”
