WATCH: Sadiq Khan reads out some of the anti-Muslim tweets he receives from trolls

2 min read

Sadiq Khan has highlighted some of the anti-Muslim abuse he receives on Twitter.

The London mayor read out a selection of the racist messages he gets sent from online trolls on a daily basis.

Mr Khan used a speech to the South by Southwest (SXSW) Interactive Conference in Austin, Texas, to shine a light on the scale of the problem.

In one of the tweets, Twitter user @MemAuSe says: "Deport all muslims and make london white again, all problems will be gone."

In another, @billwall69 tweeted: "I say kill the Mayor of London and you will be rid of one Muslim Terrorist?"

The mayor said: "I could go on and on, but I won’t. I don’t read these out to be portrayed as a victim, or to ask for sympathy.

"But ask yourself this - what happens when young boys and girls from minority backgrounds see this kind of thing on their timelines – or experience it themselves? Or someone thinking about becoming a politician?

"And what about young girls and women who are being driven from these platforms – reversing our long fight for gender equality?"
