The line-up and programme for the Bar Council’s Annual Bar and Young Bar Conference 2020 has just been announced, entitled ‘Forward thinking: Bar of the Future’.

For the first time, this year’s conference is spread across four days (18-21 November 2020) and will be held entirely virtually. We have a top line-up of practitioners, senior Judges and government ministers, including the Lord Chancellor and Shadow Lord Chancellor, speaking on the future of the Bar and the justice system. For the first time delegates can choose to sign up for the whole event or for individual sessions, making it the Bar Council’s most accessible conference ever.

Topics will range from Race at the Bar and sustainability of the profession at home and internationally, through ethics and advocacy, to resilience, best practice for courts adopting virtual technology and the future of chambers.

Representatives from all circuits, practice areas and levels of experience will come together at this pivotal moment to discuss the crucial issues facing the Bar, focussing on how to drive the profession and the justice system forward from these unprecedented times.

Amanda Pinto QC, Chair of the Bar, said: “This year has presented extraordinary challenges for us all but it has also galvanised us to change things for the better more quickly across the profession and the justice system. Looking ahead to what we want the future of justice as a whole to be has never been more important.

“By discussing what shape the Bar should take and what the best delivery of justice looks like in 2021 and beyond, we can help to mould and maintain the future of our profession in the interests of those who need us. This conference is not to be missed by barristers who are invested in the future of our profession, nor anyone with an interest in justice.”
