DWP figures showing record numbers of older people working

Independent Age

Responding to DWP figures showing record numbers of older people working beyond retirement, Simon Bottery, Director of Policy at Independent Age, the older people’s charity, said:

“We should be celebrating the contribution that people in their 60s and beyond make to our workforce. It’s a myth that older people are ‘taking the jobs’ of younger people when in fact they are helping build a stronger economy that creates employment. But we also need to recognise that many older people are still working because they can’t afford to retire. There are still 1.6 million pensioners living in poverty, so for many retirement just isn’t an option.”
