Innovate UK, the UK’s innovation agency, has appointed Ian Campbell as its first Director for Health and Life Sciences.

Ian is an experienced entrepreneur in life sciences and the diagnostics sector, and is currently Chief Executive of Arquer Diagnostics, which specialises in novel, non-invasive tests for the detection of cancer.

Ian will lead the development and delivery of Innovate UK’s strategy for accelerating economic growth and productivity through innovation in the health and life sciences sector. This is a new role in Innovate UK, following a re-organisation earlier in the year to simplify Innovate UK’s structure into four sectors.

Dr Ruth McKernan, Chief Executive of Innovate UK, said

“Ian Campbell will make a strong addition to the team at Innovate UK. He has extensive entrepreneurial and business experience which make him well-suited to lead our health and life sciences team as we set out our strategy for supporting innovation and growth over the next five years.”

Ian Campbell said

“I am delighted to be joining the highly-skilled team at Innovate UK at this exciting time. In the coming months I look forward to working with the team as we support the efforts of UK start-ups, SMEs and established companies to drive technological development and business growth.”

Ian has previously served as Commercial Director with Bespak Europe Ltd, and before that as Chief Executive of Molecular Vision, an Imperial College spin-out company which was acquired by Abingdon Health in 2012.

Ian has a strong scientific background, having gained a BSc and PhD at the University of Glasgow.

Ian is to take up his post at Innovate UK in Autumn 2016.
