Chartered Institute of Building

Dame Judith Hackitt has been presented with an Honorary Fellowship of The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) at a graduation ceremony in London this morning (Friday 3 December 2021).

Dame Hackitt authored the Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety in 2018 following the Grenfell Tower fire. This influential piece of legislation has already driven significant policy changes, including the establishment of the new Building Safety Regulator and the Building Safety Bill, currently making its way through Parliament.

Dame Judith is already a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers.

Caroline Gumble, Chief Executive of CIOB, said:

“In almost 200 years, CIOB has awarded less than fifty honorary fellowships, which demonstrates how very special this award is. On behalf of CIOB, I’m thrilled to award this prestigious honour to Dame Judith Hackitt. Her work on building safety and quality - causes central to CIOB’s mission – has already driven significant and much-needed changes in construction and will continue to have a huge positive impact on the industry for years to come. Dame Judith is the first woman to receive an honorary fellowship from CIOB, a fact which surprised me, and I trust she is the first of many women in our industry to be recognised in this way for their significant contributions.”
