We must build a social housing system with mental health at its heart - Mind
We’re still a long way from where we need to be on social housing, says Ellie White, Senior Policy and Campaigns Officer at Mind.
“Everyone deserves a safe, stable and suitable place to live. Given the lack of social housing, the Minister’s calls for it to be given greater priority are welcome, but we’re still a long way from where we need to be.
“Social housing was introduced with the aim of providing affordable, quality housing to those of us who might be struggling with issues like health and finances. But some social housing is not fit-for-purpose - especially for those of us with mental health problems. Previous research by Mind found more than two in five (43 per cent) people with mental health problems living in social housing have seen their mental health deteriorate as a result of where they live.
“We know that where we live has a huge effect on our mental health, so it’s important our homes help us stay well. The Government has a responsibility to make sure those of us with mental health problems aren’t being discriminated against, are able to access and navigate the social housing system, and are supported to live full and independent lives, to help keep us well in the longer term.
“That’s why on Tuesday (5 February), Mind is going to parliament to bring together MPs, the housing sector, and people who have experienced poor mental health as a result of their housing situation, to talk about how we can put the needs of people with mental health problems firmly at the heart of the Government’s plans for social housing.”
