Hft - Learning disability group give their views on airport expansion plans

Voices to be Heard, the speak out group for people supported by learning disabilities charity Hft, have continued to spread their wings by responding to the expansion plans for both Bristol Airport and Heathrow Airport.
Both airports are seeking views from members of the public over planned expansions, following government approval for investment in infrastructure. Members of Voices to be Heard were inspired to speak out on this issue following a recent flight to Geneva, where they gave evidence to the UN Committee on the Rights of Disabled People.
As part of the consultations, the group expressed concerns that the needs of people with learning disabilities were not being taken in to account. They also wanted to see more people with learning disabilities being employed at the airports, as well as the airports doing more to promote assisted holiday destinations.
Cynthia Webb, Project Manager for Inclusion at Hft, commented: “Whether for business or pleasure, travel is an important part of anybody’s life, and those with learning disabilities are no different. We are really pleased that the people we support have had the opportunity to have their say on the future of air travel in this country, and hopefully make travelling easier and more enjoyable for those with learning disabilities.”
Voices to be Heard have also recently submitted evidence to the Department for Transport’s transport accessibility action plan, and the Office of Rail and Road’s consultation on improving assisted travel.
