Independent Age response to government loneliness strategy
1 min read
Janet Morrison, Chief Executive of Independent Age and Chair of the Campaign to End Loneliness has issued the follwiong statement following the Government's announcement.
The government’s loneliness strategy is a landmark first step to strengthening communities and ensuring no one gets left behind. It states a comprehensive cross government commitment to reducing loneliness and strengthening communities. The proof will be in the pudding for how well resourced the national conversation will be and how local councils, mental health services and rural transport will be supported to meet its ambitions.
But importantly we all need to take up this challenge to connect with our families, neighbours and communities to not just give the strategy legs but make it leap into everyone’s lives.
I have been campaigning on this issue for ten years since setting up the Campaign to End Loneliness. We supported Jo Cox with her first Yorkshire Post Campaign and were part of the Jo Cox Commission on Loneliness, and we should all join to make this a lasting legacy to her.
