Jeremy Corbyn critic John Woodcock faces Labour sex pest probe

A prominent Labour MP and vocal critic of Jeremy Corbyn could be suspended over claims he sexually harassed a female aide.

John Woodcock stands accused of sending a former staff member inappropriate texts and emails from 2014 to 2016 - even after she left her job.

The Barrow and Furness MP will face a disciplinary hearing later this year and could lose the party whip if the claims are proved.

He has declined to comment but a source told the Sunday Mirror he plans to contest the claims.

A Labour spokesperson said: “The party takes all complaints of harassment very seriously.”

Mr Woodcock is one of the most prominent critics of the Labour leader.

He recently intervened in a Commons debate to admonish him for his stance on Russia in the wake of the nerve agent attack in Salisbury.

He has previously said he could never vote to make Mr Corbyn prime minister and waged a campaign against calls by the Labour boss for the Trident nuclear system to be scrapped.

PoliticsHome reported in March that Mr Woodcock was planning to resign the Labour whip in protest at the party's direction under Mr Corbyn's leadership
