Civil service 'career map' launched
A new online portal that enables 280,000 civil servants to identify and track their performance standards has been developed.
The Operational Delivery Profession career portal has been designed and developed by Skills for Justice in partnership with Civil Service Learning, Operational Delivery Team.
It was showcased at the recent Civil Service Live events.
“One of the things I enjoy most about going along to Civil Service Live is getting to try out some of the exciting tools developed for civil servants,” Sir Bob Kerslake, head of the Civil Service, blogged earlier this month.
“While at Civil Service Live in Bristol, I heard about the fantastic qualifications that are now available to those of you in the Operational Delivery Profession (ODP) and had a go on the fabulous new ‘career mapper’.
“As you know, my aspiration is for us to become an exceptional Civil Service. Learning and development is at the heart of this. We have gone a long way to improving our skills across the Civil Service. The next step is to deliver these professional qualifications which are recognised both in and out of the Civil Service, so you can improve your skills and be recognised for doing so.”
The portal will help those in the operational delivery function – currently numbering 280,000 across the UK – to identify and understand the activity they are expected to undertake in their job roles and will help to set performance and learning objectives.
Based on National Occupational Standards and behaviours from the Civil Service Competency Framework, Skills for Justice and the Operational Delivery team worked together to outline the key outcomes for those people working in the six main functions of the operational delivery profession.
Gillian Aitchison, Business Development Manager at
Skills for Justice, said: “This is a great tool that has already drawn praise from the top of the Civil Service. I have no doubt that it will be used by the hundreds of thousands of people it was designed for, helping them to be the best they can be and to plan their career development within the Civil Service.”
The portal also signposts relevant learning and development opportunities, including qualifications for the profession, ensuring individuals and managers can focus learning and development resource on what will add value to an individual and the business either in their current role or a role they may aspire to. There is also a direct link to the Civil Service Learning Portal resulting in a one stop shop, using a common skills language for anyone in the profession to plan their career development.
