Placing Britain as a global hub for construction
Commenting on Lord Adonis' debate on the case for improving investment in and planning for the UKs national infrastructure, David Hawkes, Policy Officer of the Chartered Institute of Building, said:
“It is positive to see that the importance of construction and infrastructure are getting acknowledged in Government, with both Lord O’Neill and Lord Adonis making contributions on the subject.
Clearly construction is a key output in the UK economy, officially contributing 6.3 per cent of GDP. And as recent large scale projects have shown such as the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics, it can bring great benefits to the economy, both locally and nationally and enable UK plc to export its expertise abroad. The demand for the skills British construction firms can deliver is growing fast and represents huge opportunity to place the country at the centre of the global construction industry. Placing Britain as a global hub for construction would bring high-grade jobs for this generation and the next and provide the bedrock on which to build a world-beating construction industry.”
