Red Cross helps migrants found locked in lorries in Essex
Dozens of migrants found locked in four lorries at a port in Essex are receiving help from British Red Cross volunteers and staff.
A total of 68 migrants, including two pregnant women, were found by border forces at Harwich International Port last night.
The group includes several young people, including a 10-year-old child. The migrants have been detained.
Red Cross emergency response volunteers are providing support to the migrants.
Individuals were checked at hospital, but no immediate health needs were identified.
Six volunteers are at the scene providing practical and emotional support. They have also given out blankets, hygiene packs, snacks and drinks.
Robyn Berry, Red Cross emergency planning and response co-ordinator, said: “Clearly these migrants have been through a highly distressing experience.
“Our volunteers have been working since 2am this morning to provide help.
“The migrants are being looked after now, but what they must have been through to get here doesn’t bear thinking about.”
